I found this short video another valuable glimpse into life on the street that helps us understand it better AND helps break the terrible stereotypes plaguing those without a home. "Rick" has some interesting points to make . . . e.g. elect someone who has known troubles and you'll see some changes in dealing with those in need.
Hey!! I'm That Poverty Guy . . . let's make a world of difference together.
When he talks about 'people on the street having a closer family then real family' what he is referring to is a commonly shared non-judgmental attitude to each other ... they, more then any other segment or group in society, accept human frailty and weakness without criticism or demand for immediate change. There, for many, is a great sense of comfort and even well-being, in being in such a peer group.
ReplyDeleteThanks Lawrence. That makes a lot a sense. If only that non-judgmental attitude would spread throughout society . . .
ReplyDeleteWhen you are (figuratively) stripped naked of all ability to preform the pretense and artifice needed to maintain a 'position' in the pecking order of common society, then, and only then, will that happen ...
ReplyDelete. . . or shine a bright enough light on the issue through awareness that it is impossible to hold the judgements previously held. Idealist perhaps . . . but that's the only way things have ever changed is through someone saying the status quo is not acceptable.
